Starting on Monday, Nov. 23, Tioga will be following the mask mandate. Students and staff need to comply. We will work with you, and we will be kind. We do not want to fight over it. Please be positive and let’s get through the next 12 days. We do NOT have school on Wednesday, Thursday (Thanksgiving Day) or Friday. Thank you for your support!

At last night’s Tioga School Board Meeting, the board voted to follow in full the Governor’s Executive Order 2020-43 which addresses the mask mandate and the postponement of NDHSAA winter activities. At Monday, November 16’s meeting, the board voted to recommend, not require, mask usage, but left the NDHSAA postponement intact. Now, the District is following the entire order. We had approximately 40 patrons at the meeting last night. There were several concerns about students wearing masks and how this would be handled by us. It is a mandate-it is not a recommendation-so we can’t just blatantly ignore it. Having said that, we don’t want to fight. The teachers, principals, and I are willing to work with students, and I think if we use common sense, show compassion and empathy, and work with each other, staff and students, we can make this work without hatred and anger. Like everything else we’ve dealt with in the last 9 months, this is all new and what we do on Monday may look differently on Tuesday. We are all learning; we are all trying to survive. Some thoughts we have: Talk to your children about the masks. It is a mandate, but staff is going to work with students. Encourage your children to be positive and be kind. I think if it’s laid out in a manner that we are going to follow this, but we are not going to draw a hard line, we will set up the scenario as “let’s work together on this instead of against each other.” Fighting, hassling, and bullying each other will get none of us anywhere. There were concerns at the meeting about potential ‘bullying.” Remind your child that it’s the teacher job to remind students about masks; not the child’s. The mask mandate is in effect until 11:59 p.m. on December 13. That is 12 school days. Will it be extended? We don’t know. Students in both buildings will be gently reminded about mask wearing, and we are asking that students do their part in working with us. If students politely refuse/don’t comply, teachers will note names and discuss it with the principals who will address it. If students refuse and act inappropriately, they will be treated as if when they act inappropriately in other instances. Like everything else, each teacher will treat the mandate a little differently; we ask students to be flexible. We will work with those students that have medical conditions that truly struggle with a mask. Our guidance is unclear as to how we are to proceed, but we will seek clarification. The “up” side is that we’ve had 63 days in school this fall. With everyone wearing masks, close contacts of positive cases in school will not need to quarantine. They will need to continue wearing a mask, and monitor symptoms. If they start displaying symptoms, they will need to stay home. Please, please, please keep monitoring your children daily and watching for symptoms. If they are sick-not only with COVID, but with colds, flu, etc.-please keep them home until they are well. As many of you don’t like this, many people feel it is the right action. We also need to model respect for others and for the mandate itself. We all have to do things in life we don’t agree with and don’t want to do. We are asking for everyone to work together so we can make this as positive as possible. Thank you for your support. We know this is a touchy topic with many viewpoints, and one we hoped we wouldn’t be a part of; however, we are now. Your kids will do a great job, and so will the staff members. Please contact the school with questions and concerns. See you on Monday!
