Hello all! Mr. Odegaard here. I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the beautiful weather. We are used to dealing with what we get with weather - and I have been impressed with how most of you have played the hand dealt with distance education. We will continue to do the best we can and provide opportunity. The Pirates will keep sailing one assignment, one class, one day at a time. I have been asked to join Jim Prather on The Talk of the Town on KTGO to talk a little about where we are at with distance education and the current status of the school tomorrow morning at 7:30 am. We appreciate the support KTGO-1090 has provided to area schools and communities this past year! I would not normally invite you to listen in via our social media outlets, however we are going to talk about an upcoming Sr. Spotlight segment and other current challenges we are facing. Jim suggested we post it here. Glad to provide a little publicity for KTGO as they continue to support our students! Today is also Administrative Professionals Day. I would like to say "Thank You" to Jayme and Steph! Ladies, you are very appreciated for the job you do organizing and keeping us running smoothly! As one of our staff members put it, "She could organize an ant farm and make it look easy." Thank you ladies and have a special day. As always, if there are any questions or if I can help in any way, please contact me at the High School or by email at Brodie.Odegaard@k12.nd.us.

ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS and Parents! While we understand things have drastically changed with our school year, it is important to note that school is still in session and learning is still taking place. Grades still matter. Tioga Public Schools is not taking the challenge lightly and we expect the same of our students. We have truly encouraged all faculty members to operate with a “grace” mentality, understanding the challenges many of you are facing and not wanting to add to any frustration. Hopefully your educational experience is still challenging you to learn and apply new knowledge, yet not consuming your time and mentality. For high school students, we are NOT in a pass/fail mode. We are still taking grades and no changes have taken place with our grading procedures. We will still be issuing letter grade percentages. You can still fail courses and credit recovery options would then come in to play. Student’s future success was vital in making this determination. We do not want any students to be punished academically by this distance learning experience, however engagement and accountability remain vital. Your courses are still credit bearing courses. You must continue to earn credits as required for graduation. Future educational and scholarship opportunities are dependent on maintaining an equitable grade system. Most of our courses are Full Year courses and your Quarter 4 grades will carry their normal weight in final grades. Depending on your learning experience, instructors have been encouraged to enter a minimum of two grades per week on PowerSchool. Parents can still access PowerSchool to follow student performance. That being said, it is our hope that instructors HAVE changed their normal expectations and operations. This is a great opportunity to remove some of the barriers classroom education inherently faces and open the doors for teachers to teach “how and what” they may have always wanted to. Hopefully they have been able to narrow the focus to fewer, more critical standards and are finding ways to keep FUN in fundamental education. If you feel you are needing more, contact your teachers as differentiated instruction is very available in distance settings. Students, please accept your parents/guardians and their support. If they would like access to your Google Classroom or other materials to help you, share any required login information with them. It’s really the same as that daily connection with your classroom teachers. Elementary students will still be graded on a rubric scoring system, same as before. Rubrics Grading Scale: 4 – Exceeds Standard 3 – Meets Standard 2 – Approaches Standard 1 – Below Standard. We know our 4th quarter scores will not show a true reflection score of what they know, but we feel we can still get the standards out to students and give them a score for their 4th quarter efforts. We understand that they may be getting help at home or less help at home, but this will help us to reflect on what we need to readdress next fall with our students. Continue to communicate with the classroom teacher if your child is struggling and we can adjust instruction to help your child during this time of distance learning. Parents/guardians, we thank you for all the support you have given to students and teachers alike! This has been difficult on some families, and embraced by others. If there is anything we can do to help, please contact the school.

Call for Yearbook Pictures Grades 7-12 With the last quarter of school taking place by way of distance learning, and our spring sports canceled, we are short on pictures for this years publication. We would love it if you could send pictures of your online learning, and COVID-19 living to be featured in the 2020 Yearbook. It will help us fill the pages left blank because of this pandemic. Please email your pictures to kschaffer@piratek12.org with the subject line of: Yearbook Photos. Thank you in advance for your help. We look forward to seeing your pictures. - THS 2020 Yearbook Staff

Good afternoon THS families! I would like to take some time to give a few updates. The first of which being the most important one to me. 1. Have a fantastic weekend celebrating Easter! Rejoice! Please take the four day weekend to enjoy with family and celebrate the Easter holiday in your special way. School can wait. 2. Students - broken record alert- PLEASE make sure you are checking your GClassroom account, piratek12.org email, and PowerSchool daily. I know many of you do not like communicating via email. We do not have a whole lot of options right now that work as well as email. Also, you must check in to your Advisory class every day. Our attendance is being simplified by this one simple task. We are making a lot of corrections to attendance, but it would be able to be managed daily through Advisory check in. 3. Seniors and Senior parents - I feel for you all in this very unsure time. I appreciate those of you that have reached out to us at the school with thoughts and ideas - all great - of ways to celebrate the Class of 2020 while not being in the building. Each year, we struggle getting the "needed things" from graduates such as pictures, forms for the paper, cap and gown measurements, etc., and that is when we are physically able to see you everyday. Now it has new challenges! Several parents have reached out with thoughts. We too would like to help, but honestly, we are swamped and are requesting you as parents to take the lead here! I would love to be able to commit more time for the different plans and ideas I have heard. And then, honestly, I worry about what the expectations would be in the future. I am going to try to set up a Senior Class listserv so that you can all share information with each other and help each other plan jointly to recognize the Class of 2020. If you are a Senior class parent and do not wish to be included, please let me know by calling the school (701.664.3606). 4. Locker room materials - If you would like your items from the locker rooms, please contact me at the school. We will make arrangements. 5. My recommendation to the school board at their upcoming meeting will be to forgive the final test policy for the Spring 2020 semester. More updates will follow. We have learned that distance education provides many challenges, but also many opportunities for students, families, and teachers. We are doing a great job! It is (mostly) getting a little easier. Parents, THANK YOU for all you have done to help. Many of you have been ultra-supportive of your children and teachers. I have encouraged "relentless communication" to our staff. I encourage students and parents to do the same! Everyone has their own unique circumstances to deal with. While this is not an ideal situation, learning is still expected to take place. Students are still to be held accountable. Grades still matter. Failure and success are still options. For students not being very diligent in their studies, the school year can extend until June 30th if necessary. The path of least resistance is to take care of what is expected of you on a daily basis. I will leave you with a quote I heard again today; "You cannot recreate the school building environment in distance learning." Missing all of our students and wishing you all a Happy Easter! Central Parents, reminder that attendance is being taken daily by your classroom teacher. Students must check in daily with them. The State still mandates us to take attendance and it counts on your child's daily attendance. Let teacher know that they are doing their work daily, by giving them a quick text or have them login and do an assignment. It doesn't have to be just between 9am to 3pm, it might be they read a book at night, do a PE activity or an assignment at night. If you are having a tough time checking in daily contact classroom teacher or contact Mr. Schaffer 701-664-3441 or tim.schaffer@k12.nd.us
